Home recording from my DIY music project of 2012, in which I wrote, self-produced and release a new song every 2 weeks throughout the year in my home studio with very minimal gear, Laptop, protools + Mbox and Shure Beta58
This was lucky number 13. The ongoing traumas of late continued with the latest release, number 13 for the project. After already running a day later then I'd planned because of sickness, I got halfway through recording this week's song when the hard drive crashed and stopped booting. The next 48 hours were lost testing, working out the problem, buying new parts, and then getting the shits because some of the new parts didn't work properly.
In the midst of this, I recorded “Gravity (What it Feels Like)” on a half dismembered computer before all the new parts had been installed. After the 1st round, it was an easy and fast process because I had already made a lot of the recording decisions and only had to redo them.
“Gravity”, and previous song “You've Changed” were a bit of a different process to usual. I had only partially completed them when I started recording and I finished them by putting down the first arrangements with rough vocals and then filling in holes in the structure and lyrics while listening to what I had on repeat.
Different again for “Gravity” was that I used a Protools function called Beat Detective to make the acoustic guitar and percussion rhythms perfectly in time. Since the interplay of these things was a much finer thing than in any other song I've done, I got them lined up perfectly on a grid in various loops to create the backbone of the sound of the track.
Anyway, the next track is well on the way and I'm hoping, luck permitting, that “Sex with Strangers” (song 14 for the year) will be available on Monday.
Talk soon lovers xx
