The verse to this song was sitting on my iPhone for six months. It survived “The Great iPhone Software Crash” of late April, as well as the inevitable and equally destructive “Great iPhone Returning to Original Settings” which followed and claimed many other whispered song-ideas and badly-framed Instagramatic snapshots of my existence in earlier 2012.

It survived these “Apple-ocolypses” with the tenacity of a cockroach through a nuclear holocaust.

So, I must admit I'm relieved I finally got to use it (so it would stop skittering across my floor and going through my rubbish bin).

I wanted to follow “Mind Games”, in it's oddness, with something reasonably straight-ahead and traditionally-structured. Once I decided on using my little cockroach, the rest of the song came together pretty quickly around the verse using song structure theory that I talked about in my last blog and a 'keep it simple, stoopid' approach. Even with the lyrics. The first 2 verse were naturally formed when I first had the song idea, which always makes writing a little easier.

I must admit I had a lot of doubts about the song. Pretty much up until the last moment, when I laid out the backing vocals, I was convinced it was awful. I think I have a very tendency towards occasionally crippling self-criticism which gets in my way quite regularly. Hell, probably everyone does, especially a lot of musicians and artists I know. One of the reasons I decided on releasing a song every 2 weeks is that, to an extent, you have to leave all that stuff at the door. Leave behind a self imposed idea of 'perfection', stop picking things apart and just get a song finished. Sometimes that's a good thing to practice, because it's easy to lose the point of things in the finer details (or course).

I hope you like it, lovers xx

lyrics

I can see clearly now
I have my eyes open
You could get what I want
But I will do whatever it takes

It could be a lonely climb
We could be torn open
As we pleed with a silent gun
Which one of us standing over
You've changed

So stay away... um
From the lonely places
You've changed so much
I don't know how
You can escape now
From the lonely places
You've changed so much

I can see clearly now
I have my heart open
You could wear a bold disguise
You could get underneith my skin

To hide from the wolves outside
Who howl in the night when the hunters prey
Til I turn it upside down
I will do whatever it takes
You've changed

The strange machine which is Fronz Arp grinds like a tattered, angry little hurdy gurdy. With dramatic jaunt and seesawing melodies that have been compared to weird-pop wonders, such as David Bowie and Tom Waits
